Shilajit: What the Research Actually Says

Shilajit is everywhere right now. Here's what the research supports for testosterone, strength and energy, what it doesn't, and how to choose a clean one.Kyle Rao

Shilajit: What the Research Actually Says

Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that seeps from rock in high mountain ranges like the Himalayas. It has been used in Ayurvedic practice for centuries, and it has recently become one of the most talked-about supplements for energy and men's health. Here's what the research supports, what it doesn't, and what to look for if you try it.

What shilajit is

Shilajit forms over centuries as plant material breaks down and gets compressed between layers of rock. The resin is rich in fulvic acid, along with dozens of trace minerals. Fulvic acid is the compound most researchers point to when explaining shilajit's effects.

What the studies show

Testosterone

The most cited study is a 90-day, placebo-controlled trial in healthy men aged 45 to 55. Men taking 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day saw a significant increase in total testosterone compared with placebo. It's a single study in a specific age group, so it's a promising signal rather than a guarantee, but it's the main reason shilajit shows up in testosterone support formulas.

Strength and fatigue

A separate trial in active men found that 500 mg a day for eight weeks helped participants hold on to more muscle strength after a fatiguing exercise test. The researchers linked this to changes in collagen-related markers, which suggests a possible role in recovery.

Energy

Much of the energy claim comes from lab research on how fulvic acid and shilajit may support mitochondria, the parts of your cells that produce energy. That research is interesting, but there are fewer human studies here, so treat energy benefits as likely-but-unproven.

What it won't do

  • It won't replace sleep, training or a decent diet. Those still move testosterone and energy more than any supplement.
  • It won't work overnight. The studies above ran for 8 to 12 weeks.
  • It isn't a treatment for low testosterone. If you think your levels are clinically low, talk to a doctor.

How to choose a good shilajit

  • Purified, not raw. Raw shilajit can contain heavy metals and contaminants. Only buy purified product.
  • Third-party tested. Look for a brand that tests for heavy metals and purity.
  • Resin or standardized extract. Resin is the traditional form. Extracts let you control the dose more precisely.
  • A clear dose. Research doses ran from 250 to 500 mg a day.

How to take it

Most people dissolve a pea-sized portion of resin in warm water or tea once a day, usually in the morning. Start with a small amount, take it consistently for at least eight weeks, and track how you feel. If you take prescription medication or have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.

The bottom line

Shilajit is one of the few traditional supplements with real, if early, human research behind it, especially for testosterone and strength in men. Buy purified, take it consistently, and pair it with the basics. Our Pure Himalayan Shilajit Resin is purified and billed once, with no subscription.
